A new base for neighbourhood policing officers has been officially opened at Leeds Bradford International Airport.
The Airport Neighbourhood Policing Team now has a dedicated office on the Yeadon site, which has been provided rent free by the airport’s management.
Previously the team, which consists of an inspector, a sergeant, eight police constables, and three police community support officers, reported for duty each day at Otley police station and had to travel to the airport to conduct its business.
But now officers will be on site from first thing in the morning to late at night at their office at Unit 7, Wharfedale Walk, off White House Lane.
Assistant Chief Constable Jawaid Akhtar joined Carl Lapworth, Operations Director at LBIA, to officially open the new facility yesterday (4/3) alongside representatives from businesses and the local community.
The accommodation has been fitted out with computers linked to the police network and includes locker facilities and a public waiting area.
Inspector Adrian Barnes, who heads the Airport NPT, said: “The opening of this new office is a massive step forward in the policing of the airport which will bring significant benefits to passengers, staff, businesses and local residents and also brings us in line with other regional airports that have an on-site police presence.
“It means officers will be more accessible and visible at the airport site which is one of the commitments we have made to people under the Policing Pledge. The team is now much better positioned to provide reassurance and support to people using the airport as well as providing a visible deterrent against crime and anti-social behaviour.
“It also gives us the facility to hold regular weekly surgeries where anyone living or working in the area of the airport can come along to the office and discuss any issues they have with us.”
Carl Lapworth said: “We recognise that the Airport Neighbourhood Policing Team plays an important role in working with the community. The move enables us to strengthen this important partnership with the police to benefit both our customers and local residents.”
Public surgeries will be held at the office every Friday between noon and 2pm.
